Winneshiek County Fair races tore up the dirt at the Upper Iowa Speedway on July 10 as hometown Decorah, Iowa driver Dan Hovden picked up his fourth UIS checkered flag of the season, the most any driver has grabbed in 2014.
Hovden has now wheeled his B-Mod to within four points of season-leading Matt Jones of Waukon, Iowa (627 to 631) while Chris Weigert of New Hampton, Iowa holds third at 524.
The pair of leaders went head to head in Thursday's feature finishing 1-2. Hovden started in sixth while Jones worked his way up from eighth place. Jason Schlangen of Cresco, Iowa took third.
Spring Grove's Casey Knutson finished seventh, while Caledonia drivers Cole Konkel and Taylor Skauge finished 18th and 19th, respectively.
The UIS points series includes five classes. The Mod Lites champ was Curt Luhmann of Rushford who made his second trip to victory lane. Luhmann also has two second-place finishes this year so far and tops the leader-board with 621 points. Eli Hershberger of Mabel is second with 583 while Christopher Eide of Peterson holds third at 543.
Second place in the feature went to Hershberger with Don Werner of Rollingstone taking third. Corey Whalen of Harmony finished fourth while Adam Rogich of Mabel took seventh. John Griffin of Caledonia was 15th.
In the four-cylinder Hornets class, Elgin drivers Tyler Becker and Frank Durnan took first and second, respectively. Arthur Schott of Clermont, Iowa was third. Christopher Schansberg of Caledonia held down seventh, Jay Mensink of Harmony 10th and Breanna Lee of Mabel 11th.
Ryan Ayers of Decorah holds sway for the season so far with 605 points. Schott is second at 584 and Mensink third with 530.
Hobby Stocks was won by Adam Cline of Decorah. Steve Holthaus of Cresco took second followed by Iowan Benji Irvine. Chad Olson of Harmony took seventh.
The season race is close. Joshua Ludeking of Decorah leads the series with 580 points; Olson is second at 576 and Holthaus third with 574.
When the dust settled from the Stock Cars feature, another Decorah-based Hovden, Mitch Hovden, had collected UIS win number three. Second went to Shay Curtin of Cresco while Dan Jones of Waterville, Iowa snagged third. Spring Grove's Pete Solum took fourth, and Caledonia driver Jake Lampert finished seventh.
Mitch is also first in points for the season with 635. Kyle Falck of Decorah is second with 576 while Jones holds third at 549.
The series moves to Cresco Speedway on Sunday, July 20 and Sunday, July 27. That venue is located at the Howard County Fairgrounds. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm with racing at 6:30.
