Cool, almost fall-like temperatures descended upon Decorah's Upper Iowa Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 11, but the action on the track was as hot as ever.

No less than 77 entrants took to the banked clay oval, competing in five classes. Decorah drivers fared well, winning three out of five points (feature) races.

There were 14 drivers in the Hornets feature. Ryan Happel of Holmen, Wis., took the checkered flag followed by season-leader Jay Mensink of Harmony. Christopher Schansberg of Caledonia was 10th.

Mensink leads Iowan Chris Gooder on the leader board 950 points to 882.

Mod-lites brought in nine mini- cars powered by 600cc motorcycle engines. David Benke of Winona won the points race followed by Caledonia's John Griffin. Curt Luhmann of Rushford took third and stayed in first place on the yearly points tally.

Todd Kiehne of Harmony took fourth while Chris Eide of Rushford finished sixth. Justin Zmyewski of Houston completed the nine-driver field.

Most numerous were the B-Mods, which fielded 23 cars. Kyle Anderson of Decorah, Iowa, won the feature race posting 100 points on the leader-board.

Casey Knutson of Spring Grove was seventh and Jon Van Minsel 19th, both of Spring Grove

Brian Mahlstedt remains in first place on the year with 992 points, VanMinsel holds fourth place at 799 with Knutson fifth at 777.

The Hobby Stocks division drew 17 cars. Decorah natives Adam Cline and Steve Larson finished 1-2. Lanesboro's Adam Sveen took 13th, while Dorchester's Justin Bigler rounded out the field in 17th.

Stock Cars fielded 14 entrants with Decorah driver Mitch Hovden winning the feature race. Jake Lampert of Caledonia was eighth, and Spring Grove's Pete Solum came in ninth. Shawn Peter of Mabel finished 14th.

Hovden is the first driver to break 1000 points this year at UIS, leading the class with 1030. Solum ranks fifth with 907 points.

The next scheduled race date is Saturday, Aug. 18. The United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS)/Iron Man Series will be on tap.

Classes will be USMTS modifieds, USRA Stock Cars & USRA B-Mods. The stocks and B-Mods will be UIS weekly classes with several drivers from out of town.
