Racing season finally underway at Decorah

On Sunday, May 19, the 2013 racing season began at Decorah's Upper Iowa Speedway. Two earlier dates were cancelled due to track conditions related to weather.
The same five classes of cars returned for another run at the local points series. Those included Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, B-mods, 4-cylinder Hornets and Mod Lites.
In the 600cc Mod Lites feature, Curt Luhman of Rushford took the checkered flag, earning the first 100 points in the weekly series. Corey Whalen of Harmony was second (95 points) followed by Todd Kiehne (also of Harmony), Bob Cisewski of Winona and John Griffin of Caledonia.
The Hornets also hit the track, with John LeJeune of La Crosse, Wis., getting the first win. Paul Seabrooke of Elgin, Iowa, was second. Jay Mensink of Harmony took third, followed by Spring Grove's Luke Onstad. Breanna Lee of Mabel took ninth.
Hobby Stocks brought out a strong field with 13 cars in the final. Adam Cline of Decorah won the icebreaker followed by Cresco (Iowa) natives Steve Holthaus and Scott Spilde. Steve Larson of Decorah was fourth with Josh Ludeking (also of Decorah) in fifth. Chad Olson of Harmony took sixth place. Adam Sveen of Lanesboro finished 12th.
Sixteen B-Mods also tore up the dirt in the feature. Troy Hovey of Decorah won the race followed by Jeremy Schaufenbuel of New Hampton, Iowa. Dan Hovden of Decorah took third. Jon VanMinsel of Spring Grove finished fourth followed by Todd Schaufenbuel of New Hampton. Greg Mitchell of Decorah took sixth. Caledonia native Cole Konkel finished in 11th place.
Four Decorah drivers swept up the top spots in Stock Cars. They were: Mitch Hovden (first) followed by Kyle Falck, Danny Sacquitne and Bryan Webb. Pete Solum of Spring Grove took fifth. Sixth place went to Derek Dettmann of Monona. Dan Jones of Waterville returned to the track, finishing in 10th. Jake Lampert of Caledonia finished in 11th place.
Weather permitting, the weekly point races will resume this Saturday night, May 25, with hot laps at 6 p.m. and racing at 6:30 at the semi-banked quarter-mile clay oval track in Decorah, Iowa.
