The United States Modified Touring Series / Iron Man Series for B-Mods and Stock Cars returned to Decorah's Upper Iowa Speedway (UIS) on Aug. 18.
Touring series A-Mods from far and wide competed in three eight-lap heat races and a "B" main race of 10 laps to sort out the all-important starting positions for the purse and points feature race.
That 40-lap, 25-car extravaganza featured a first-place payout of $3,000 won by Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D.
The USRA B-Mods class featured a mix of competitors from the UIS weekly points series and a few drivers from slightly farther afield. Upper Iowa Speedway awarded points for the local leader-board for both the B-Mod and Stock classes.
After three eight-lap heats and an eight-lap "B" main race, 24 drivers advanced to the main event. Jason Schlangen of Cresco, Iowa, won the 20-lap feature, leading from pole to pole. Casey Knutson of Spring Grove finished 22nd.
The top purse was $500, ratcheting down to $75 for 12th through 23rd places.
USRA Stock Cars brought out 21 competitors. Three eight-lap heat races sorted out the field for a 20-lap main event. Decorah resident Mitch Hovden won the checkered flag, earning $700 and 100 points. Jake Lampert of Caledonia took 13th. Pete Solum of Spring Grove qualified for the feature but did not finish.
Hovden lengthened his lead in the season points competition with 1130 points to 1061 for second-place Kevin Donlan. Solum is fifth at 952.
