Eighteen-year-old Casey Knutson of Spring Grove finished fifth in the B-Mods feature at the special edition of the Upper IA Speedway races.

Eighty-eight drivers hit the track at the Upper Iowa Speedway (UIS) in Decorah, Iowa, on Thursday, July 12. The Winneshiek County Ag Society hosted the event held in conjunction with the Winneshiek County Fair, so there were plenty of spectators on hand at the semi-banked quarter-mile clay oval.

With 26 cars in the B-Mods class alone, four heats and a B-Feature were needed to narrow down the contenders for the points race.

The final feature included 18 drivers and was won by hometown entrant Bryan Webb. Eighteen-year-old Casey Knutson of Spring Grove finished fifth. Jon VanMinsel, also of Spring Grove, started in 17th position and finished 10th.

The B-Mod leader-board now has those two Spring Grove drivers near the top. VanMinsel (682) is in fourth position while Knutson (633) has moved up to fifth.

Stock Cars required three heats to sort out the starting positions with 18 drivers lining up for the feature won by Matt Jones of Waukon.

Spring Grove's Pete Solum was fifth just ahead of points leader Mitch Hovden of Decorah. Caledonia's Jake Lampert was 10th while Shawn Peter of Mabel took 14th.

Solum is enjoying his ninth season at UIS and has wheeled No. 37 into fifth place on the leader-board with 755 points. Lampert (658) is currently in eighth place.

Hobby Stocks featured 17 cars. Steve Holthaus of Cresco, Iowa, won the points race. Adam Sveen of Lanesboro was ninth with Justin Bigler of Dorchester, Iowa, finishing 13th and Chad Olson of Harmony 16th.

Four-Cylinder Hornets had 13 competitors. Harmony native Jay Mensink took the checkered flag. Mike Schansberg of Caledonia came in eighth. Mensink is at the top of the Hornets leader board with 760 points.

In the Mod-Lites feature, Joe Provinzino of Chanhassen, Minn., won all the marbles in his first 2012 appearance at the track.

Gregory Wohletz on Winona took second followed by John Griffin of Caledonia in third place.

Curt Luhmann of Rushford finished fifth while Todd Kiehne of Harmony came in eighth.

Justin Zmyewski of Houston, who moonlights as a county commissioner, took 11th.

Rushford's Chris Eide was 12th while Lanesboro's Nick Wagner rounded out the field in 14th position.

Luhmann leads on the year with 754 points, followed by Griffin at 711 and Eide with 630.

Saturday, July 21, is the next race date for UIS. Hot laps start at 6:00 p.m. with racing action kicking off at 6:30.
