Come to Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa, on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and explore the details of the museum's exhibitions during the Free First Thursday event "Take a Closer Look with Carl Homstad."

Homstad will lead activities that direct the viewer's attention to the smaller, more intricate, details that artists bring together to create their work.

"Free First Thursdays" offers free museum admission and feature a special event on the first Thursday of each month. Check www.vesterheim.org for a schedule of events.

Homstad's activity is in connection with a new art exhibition, "A Sense of Place: A Carl Homstad Retrospective," on view since Aug. 24 in the Hong Gallery on the third floor of the museum's Main Building.

This retrospective exhibition includes more than 40 woodcuts, etchings, drawings, watercolors and oil paintings by Homstad.

Born in 1951 in Denver, Colo., Homstad has lived in rural Decorah since 1970. He graduated from Luther College with a B.A. in art in 1973.
