The Salvation Army Red Kettles are important for our service unit. Our unit receives 88 percent of what is collected from the kettles in Fillmore County. Our year goes from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1. Our budget for the past year was $14,800 and from that budget we spent $6,000 on Holiday food boxes (100 boxes at Easter and 100 boxes at Thanksgiving). The five schools in Fillmore County received $500 for their milk break programs. Nursing homes enjoyed a social time with root beer floats. A new program "Shop with a Cop" was added to our activities this year and was allotted $1,600. Approximately $500 went for personal needs kits. These are personal items in a bag that can be given out to those in need from domestic problems to disasters, etc. We allotted $3,000 for personal assistance which is gas to get to a medical appointment and other emergency situations. This kettle money does a lot of good here in Fillmore County.

We are still looking for interested people to be part of our unit. We meet once a month on the fourth Thursday and the next meeting will be Jan. 24, 2013, due to the holidays. We meet at the Preston United Methodist Church at 9:30 a.m. For more information call Joan Kidd, 352-2242 or just come to the meeting.
