Darrell "Squirrel" Simonson, 71, of Grand Meadow, died Monday Dec. 16, 2013, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center where he had resided for a short time.

He was born in Grand Meadow on June 16, 1942, to Leland Simonson and Bernice (Skaren) Simonson. He attended and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1960 and attended Mankato State for two years. He was united in marriage to Deborah Peterson on Aug. 26, 1972, at Union Prairie Church in Lanesboro. Mr. Simonson was employed by T&M Underground and Mastec. He retired in 2004. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and playing cribbage. He was also an avid drummer, playing in "The Pea Pickers" for 35 years.

He is survived by his children, Shane (Loni) Simonson of Spring Valley, Stacy (Bruce) Williams of Milford, Kan., and Ryan (Kasey) Simonson of Elkton; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Deborah in 2006, and two brothers, Merlin and Roger.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Bear Creek Lutheran Church - Frankford Township in Mower County with the Rev. Larry Iverson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 1 p.m. until time of service.
