Donald DeYoung, 79, stepfather of Spring Valley resident

Donald Wayne DeYoung died Monday, April 21, 2014, of natural causes at Mayo Medical Center in Austin.
He was born Sept. 8, 1934, in Pleasant Valley Township, Mower County, to Ira and Elsie (Schutz) DeYoung.
He grew up on the family farm, attended rural school and Stewartville schools, graduating from Stewartville High School in 1952.
He was married Jan. 31, 1953, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester to Joan E. Thedens.
Following their marriage, the couple moved to Babbitt, where he was employed at an iron ore mine for a few years. In 1960, the DeYoungs moved to rural Stewartville, where they farmed, raised their family and lived for a number of years. His wife died on Oct. 11, 1988.
Besides farming, he was also employed at Greenway Co-op in Stewartville, before he began a 28-year career at IBM in Rochester, working there until his retirement.
He was married on Nov. 23, 1991, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley to Judith E. Frank. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Dexter for a number of years and then for a few years in Spring Valley and had recently moved to Austin.
He was a past member, as a young boy and teen, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley and was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville where he served on its leadership councils, as an usher and Sunday school teacher.
He enjoyed traveling all his life and took many trips across the Midwest and beyond with his young family. Following his retirement, he and his wife would drive their RV south and west in the winter. He enjoyed golfing, playing sports as a youth in school, going to flea markets, collecting toy cars and farming. He loved time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; two daughters and one son, Susan (Jimmy John) King and Nancy (Tom) Kidd, both of Stewartville and Chris (Laura Megahan) DeYoung of Mantorville; three stepdaughters, Penny (Randy) Ness of Spring Valley, Tammy (Michael) Troska of High Forest and Lori (David) Reuter of Rose Creek; seven grandchildren, Emily (Jon) Barlow, John King (Rochelle Franks), Mia King (Brady Johnson), Aaron (Brie) Kidd, Joseph (Esiquia) Kidd, Aaron (Lisa) DeYoung and Alexis DeYoung; 13 stepgrandchildren, Molly Ness (Paul Youseff), Brandon (Carlie) Ness, Kelsey (Matt) Gehling, Erin Ness, Amy Troska-Morgan, Adam Morgan, Isaac Troska, Tyler Troska, Bryten (Jameson) Hanson and Colten, Braden, Ashlyn and Camryn Reuter; nine great-grandchildren, Ayanna, Addisyn, Emitt, Kylie, Charlie, Brooks, Katy, Lydia and Alexander.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, an infant son, Danny, a stillborn son and a stepson, Daniel Price.
The memorial service for him was held Thursday, April 24, at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Stewartville, with the Rev. Lyle Fritsch officiating. A burial and committal service followed at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Pleasant Valley Township.
Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville assisted the family with the funeral arrangements.
