JoAnn Emma Brusse, 72, of Spring Valley, died on Saturday morning, Feb. 8, 2014, with her daughters at her side, following a 10-year battle with dementia/Alzheimer's at the Patty Elwood Center at Country Winds Manor in rural Cresco, Iowa.
She was born March 20, 1941, in Lake Mills, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Laura (Lund) Olson. From the age of 2 she was raised and lived with Mort and Marie Bonnerud in rural Spring Valley.
She was a 1959 graduate of Spring Valley High School. As a young lady, she served as a carhop at the Malt-N-Burger for several years.
She married Lowell A. Brusse on Sept. 3, 1960, in Bloomfield Lutheran Church in rural Ostrander. The couple made their home in Spring Valley.
She was a 35-year kitchen employee of the Spring Valley/Kingsland school district and was head cook for a number of years. She also worked with her husband in their family business, Pioneer Collectables.
Her husband died Nov. 23, 2005. She became a resident of the Evergreens in Spring Valley in 2010. She moved to Wildwood Grove in LeRoy and then to the Patty Elwood Center in September 2013.
She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley. She enjoyed traveling with her husband with their toy business all over the country. She was a longtime blood donor. She loved her family and grandsons.
She is survived by two daughters, Lesa (Chris Gunderson) Brusse and Brenda (Kenny) Clark of Spring Valley; two grandsons, Michael and Matthew Clark of Spring Valley; five brothers and sisters, Ardis Copeman of Spring Valley, Janice (Mike) Lyons of LeRoy, Jerry Nelson of Tomah, Wis., Ralph (Karon) Bonnerud of Spring Valley and Marlene (Mert) Root of Ostrander; mother-in-law, Stella Brusse of Ostrander; two brothers-in-law, Julian (Karen) Brusse of Rochester and Terry Brusse of Cherry Grove; sister-in-law, Luann (David) Garrison of Spring Valley; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Orville "Corby" Olson, Marlin Olson, Arden Olson and Art Olsen and an infant sister, Nancy Nelson.
The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, at Faith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Beth Perez officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Valley Cemetery. Friends may call at the Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12, and at the church on Thursday an hour before the service.
Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley assisted the family with the funeral arrangements.
