Mary Linn Gustafson Posey, 74, of Huntington Beach, Calif., formerly of Spring Valley, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013.

She was born April 28,1939, in St. Paul. At age 10, she moved to her new family farm near Spring Valley. She attended Empire School and Wykoff High School. She received a B.A. in English and P.E. from Hamline University, and an M.A. in special education from Winona State University. She was a beloved teacher in Wykoff, the San Francisco Bay area, and Gaithersburg, Md.

She was also a beloved mother. She raised two daughters with Monte Posey in both California and Minnesota. After retiring, she continued to tutor children with dyslexia and remained active in her community. She lived a life of service to others, and was known by many for her undefeatable optimism despite continual health challenges.

Survivors include two daughters, Stacey Posey, Ridgeway, Colo., and Linn Posey-Maddox, Madison, Wis.; a son-in-law and grandchild, Dwayne Maddox and Quinton Maddox; siblings, Mary Ann Blakeslee, Chatfield, Sam (Gloria) Blakeslee, Spring Valley, and Robert Gustafson (San Diego); and her Sunday school friend and partner, Terry Jorris, Huntington Beach. Also among her survivors are nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Blakeslee, her father, Gilbert Gustafson, and her stepfather, Walter Blakeslee.
