Volunteers ringing the bell for the Salvation Army in Spring Valley have quite a range of ages, but Friday's afternoon crew at Sunshine Foods set the mark for the youngest as the kids at Anna Krahn's Daycare took their turn.

Krahn said some of the older children, including her son, Gavin, have been asking more questions lately when they have encountered homeless people in Rochester. She has taken some of the kids to Good Will and tried to explain how other people may not have the same life as they do.

"It's one way to get them to understand that not everyone gets a good meal each day like they do," she said.

Although the younger ones in her daycare likely don't comprehend the significance of people donating to help those in need, all the children enjoyed taking part in the activity.

"It's a good way to learn about giving back to the community," said Krahn.

The Spring Valley Kiwanis Club is responsible for manning the red kettles set up at Sunshine Foods and Alco in Spring Valley. The money goes to the Salvation Army, which aids people in need of food, lodging or other temporary assistance. All the money raised locally is returned to Fillmore County.

Steve Hadoff of the local Kiwanis Club noted that about $6,900 was raised last year. He said that the kettle definitely fills more quickly when people are present to ring the bells.

The public is welcome to not only donate, but also to ring the bells. An online form is available at kiwanisofspringvalley.org to sign up for a time slot. A link is provided under Kiwanis news on the right side of the web page.
