Faith United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Spring Valley collected 530 pounds of food and donations of $1,365.20 during March - Minnesota FoodShare Month.
Church member Nancy Cornell, gratefully recounted the results of the food drive that the church's congregation, its missions committee and Sunday school students held to benefit the Spring Valley Area Food Shelf.
She stated, "Members of the congregation, Sunday school classes and youth participated during the month of March." The collection began on the first Sunday of March and ended on the last Sunday of March. All Sunday school classes participated, from pre-school to 12th grade.
The youth in grades sixth through 12th also hung bags on doors in neighborhoods near the church with notes telling about the food drive. They returned to pick up the bags a week later.
Cornell added, "Our goal was 1,200 pounds of food or cash, and $1 was equal to one pound. We added pounds and cash together, and we accomplished 1,895!"
Cornell and her husband, Denis, were privileged to deliver the goods to the food shelf. She commented, "What was fun for me was seeing all the bags of food at church each Sunday in March, experiencing the excitement from the food shelf volunteers when my husband and I brought bags and bags of food in, and to watch how the shelves went from mostly empty to overflowing at the end of the month.
"This, of course, wasn't just from our church's donations, but from all the groups and churches that also participated in the Minnesota Food Share March drive. But we accomplished 1,895!"
