A last minute phone call turned into a fishing experience of a lifetime for two Spring Valley residents.

Dick Harreld and Harold Westphal have been friends and neighbors for over 20 years and had been trying to line up a trip to the backwaters of the Mississippi River all summer. Finally, on Sept. 26 they were able to take advantage of a gorgeous day and come together for their long-awaited trip to the big river.

After arriving in Trempealeau, Wis., and taking a short boat ride, the men were set, with their poles in the water and two scoops of crappie minnows to tempt their prey. Westphal took the honor of catching the first and largest fish of the day.

By the end of the day the two men were able to keep 30 crappie, 12 range, three sunfish and one large perch, a successful day by anyone's standards.

"All in all it was a trip I will remember the rest of my life and time very well spent with a good friend," Harreld concluded.
