The Spring Valley Community Center is showing a little more heart with the addition of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).

The city of Spring Valley is receiving units in partnership with the Fillmore County AED Collaborative, which was able to secure a competitive federal grant to add over 70 AEDs to numerous locations in the county.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. An AED is an effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during a sudden cardiac arrest and can easily be operated by someone with no medical background.

"Since the critical first five minutes often pass before emergency crews can respond having the availability of the AED at the Community Center could mean the difference between life and death for a person suffering from a heart event," explained city administrator Deb Zimmer.

In addition to the community center's unit, Spring Valley will be receiving three additional units to be placed at city hall, the pool and the library in 2015.
