A duly posted regular meeting of the Board of Education, Independent School District No. 2137 was held in the Kingsland District Conference Room on Monday, March 17, 2014 at 6:30 p.m.

Board Chair Doug Plaehn called the meeting to order. Present: Kristin Beck, Gwen Howard, Troy Asher, Deb Larson, Steve Tart and Doug Plaehn. Absent: none.

Beck moved to approve the following consent items: the board agenda, the minutes from the February 19 meeting, the March bills, the principal contract for Chris Priebe, the first reading of Policies 421, 422, 423, 424 and the second reading of Policies 418, 419, 420. Tart seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Thank you's were given to St. Jude's for the Robotics donation, National Wild Turkey Federation for the Trap Team donation, the Tootie Foster Scholarship, and Ross Heusinkveld donation.

Lynn Kidd addressed the board about the upcoming community meeting.

Student Reports were given by Dane G and Brianna M on FFA and FFA week. Spotlight on Education presentations were presented by Deanna Capelle, Greg Schaitel and Jill Thalmann on third grade, as well as Andrew Brouwer, Paul Wilson, CJ Boerger and Jen Orth from KHS. Josh Hogberg reported on the small group music contest. Board member Asher reported on the Finance and Facility committee, Larson reported on the Curriculum/Personnel committee, and Beck reported on the Policy & PR committee. Principals Chris Priebe and James Hecimovich submitted written reports as well as presented. Building & Grounds Director Scott Stockdale submitted a written report, as did Special Education Director Micki Breitsprecher. Superintendent McDonald gave his report to the board as well.

Old Business

Beck moved to approve the last student day as Wednesday, June 4th, and the last teacher day as Thursday, June 5th. Tart seconded. Motion failed 6-0.

Beck moved to have the last student day Friday, May 30th, and the last teacher day Thursday, June 5th. Asher seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

New Business

Information on the Best Buy "Bring Your Own Device" Program was presented to the board.

Beck moved to approve the resignation of Lorin Hove as van driver. Tart seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Beck moved to approve the resignation of Joanne Williams as KMS cook. Howard seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Howard moved to accept the resignation of Tom Speltz as Activities Director. Beck seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Howard moved to approve the hire of Angela Forland as Special Education Long Term Substitute for Erin Cady. Beck seconded. Motion carried by unanimously.

Beck moved to approve the hire of Kyle Weinmann as Junior High track coach. Larson seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Howard moved to hire Aaron Thauwald as Assistant track coach. Tart seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Beck moved to approve the Spring Coaching list as presented. Larson seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Beck moved to hire an additional Junior High softball coach. Asher seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Beck moved to approve the Senior Class Trip to Chicago. Howard seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Administration presented on the Wednesday early outs and progress of the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and Response to Intervention (RTI) teacher teams.

Howard moved to approve the 2014-15 calendar format as presented by Superintendent McDonald as worked on with the Calendar Committee. Asher seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Howard moved to approve a 3 year contract with Mediacom to provide technology and internet services for Kingsland Public Schools. Tart seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Beck moved to approve the revised Fiscal Year 2014 Budget as presented. Tart seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Beck moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:17 p.m. Larson seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

The next regular meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the District Office Conference Room.
