Lacianne Skifter, daughter of Tim and Sue Skifter of Spring Valley and second-grade student at Minnesota Virtual Academy, recently competed in the 26th annual U.S. Figure Skating Hiawathaland Open Competition.

The event was held in Rochester at the Rec Center Feb. 3 through 5, hosted by the Rochester Figure Skating Club. Judges were on hand from all over the country (including Colorado and Vermont) as well as competitive skaters from over 25 different skating clubs. Skaters can choose from a vast number of skating events in which to compete.

Laci competed in the Basic 1 Program. Under the direction of her private coach, Mandy Wagner, Laci selected music of "Dance of the Seaweed," a piano piece written and recorded by Kevin Mongelli of Florida, and coach Wagner choreographed a routine to include elements of the Basic 1 level. Laci took first place for her Basic 1 Program. This was especially exciting since it was her first time in competition since starting skating lessons last April.

The Rochester Figure Skating Club will be putting on the upcoming Rochester Ice Show called "World Tour." Show dates are Friday, April 20, and Saturday, April 21, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m.

Attend and support local figure skaters! For more information on the show or on skating (figure or hockey) go to www.rochesterfsc.org or www.usfigureskating.org.
