St. Johns Lutheran School in Wykoff won the Southeast Minnesota Lutheran Schools Region 3 Spelling Bee.

This is the fourth year the school has won first place at the spelling bee, with previous wins in 2010, 2012 and 2013.

In 2014, the team took first place, beating second place Immanuel Silo in Lewiston and third place St. Martins in Winona. Other teams in the competition include Rochester Central Lutheran School and Immanuel in Plainview.

Some samples of the seventh and eighth grade challenge words are anachronism, hippophile, onomatopoeia, philately, assiduously and oligarchy.

St. Johns students also took a number of individual trophies, which included the following: Isabel Snyder, first place for grades three and four; Joshua Burmeister, first place for grades five and six; Megan Schultz, second place for grades seven and eight; Nicole Schultz, third place for grades three and four; Duncan McDonald, third place for grades seven and eight.

Other members of the St. Johns team included: Andrew Imm and Eliza Kiese in grades three and four; Ethan Imm, Raegan Eickhoff, Kileigh Howard and alternate Bradly Snyder in grades five and six; and Sydney Eickhoff, Reece Eickhoff and alternate Daniel Hayes-Hall in grades seven and eight.
