The GMLOK baseball team finished its regular season early last week with a game on Monday against the Chatfield Gophers and another on Tuesday against the Lewiston-Altura Cardinals. From there, the Bulldogs began postseason play, taking on the La Crescent Lancers in the first round of the 1A Sub-section playoffs on Thursday.
Chatfield 14, GMLOK 2
The Bulldogs started the week with a tough loss to a talented Gopher team in which they accumulated only three hits. The Gophers jumped out to an early lead and continued to add to it throughout while holding the GMLOK lineup in check for most of the game.
After the Gophers increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second, the Bulldogs cut into that lead by scoring a run in the bottom of the inning. The run was scored without a hit recorded in the books as Quinn Larson reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a passed ball, and came around to score when Isiah Bubany reached on an error.
GMLOK added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rindels scored this run after reaching on a walk and stealing second base. He crossed home plate on a single by Blake Olson one pitch after swiping second.
The run in the fourth inning would be the end of the scoring for the Bulldogs in this game, however, as the Gopher pitching staff held them scoreless for the final four inning while its offense continued to add to its run total.
Isaac Tangen started the game on the mound for the Bulldogs and pitched the first four innings for his team. In his time on the mound he allowed seven runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out one. Tangen was relieved by Wyatt Richardson in the fifth. Richardson gave up seven more runs, five earned, on four hits and six walks over three innings. He also struck out four batters in his time on the mound. The two pitchers were forced to work around nine errors in the field, making their task of keeping the potent Gopher lineup in check almost impossible.

GMLOK concluded its regular season schedule with a game against the Cardinals. Though the Bulldogs got seven hits in the game, they were unable to push a run across home plate as they were shut out by the Cardinals.
The Bulldog offense struggled mightily to begin the game, failing to send more than four batters to the plate in any of the first four innings. They were able to put together scoring threats in the fifth and sixth innings, though.
A two-out single by Josh Shorter, one of his three singles on the day, was followed by a walk from Wyatt Richardson that put runners on first and second. They would be stranded there, however, as the third out of the inning was recorded by the next batter.
The rally in the sixth was started by a walk from Trenton Bleifus. Two batters later he was moved to second on a single by Tangen. After a successful double steal put them on second and third, the two runners were stranded there as a ground out ended the inning.
The Bulldogs sent Bubany to the mound to start the game against the Cardinals. He pitched the first three-and-a-third innings of the game. During his time on the mound, Bubany gave up five runs, two earned, on five hits and five walks while striking out two. Larson relieved Bubany in the fourth and pitched through the sixth. In his two and two thirds innings, Larson was flawless, allowing no base-runners and striking out four of the eight batters he faced. Blake Olson came on to pitch in the seventh. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning, giving up three hits and striking out one.
GMLOK 4, La Crescent 6
The Bulldogs opened postseason play as the eighth seed in the sub-section tournament, which matched them up against the number one seed La Crescent Lancers. Despite being the underdog, GMLOK held the lead in this game for the first four innings, before finally succumbing to a late Lancer rally.
Rindels led off the game with a double to deep left field to get the Bulldog offense started in the bottom of the first. He came around to score on a Bleifus single two batters later. Blake Olson, who reached on a walk immediately following Rindels, also scored on the Bleifus single, advancing home on the throw to the plate. A Doug Sabatke double that scored Bleifus capped off the three run first inning for the Bulldogs.
The Lancers responded with a run in the bottom of the first and another in the second. After being held scoreless in the third and fourth, they turned their one run deficit into a one run lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. They then extended that lead to 6-3 with two more runs in the sixth inning.
GMLOK rallied in the seventh and final inning but were only able to push one run across. Shorter scored the run, reaching on a single and advancing to third on a wild pitch and a ground out. He scored on a single by Blake Olson. With Rindels on second, Olson represented the tying run at first base, but both were stranded as the next batter struck out to end the game.
Larson was the starting pitcher in this game for the Bulldogs. He pitched three innings during which he allowed an earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out two. He was relieved in the fourth by Tangen who pitched the final three innings. Tangen allowed four runs, one of which was earned, on seven hits in his relief appearance.
With the loss, the Bulldogs were eliminated from the sub-section tournament, concluding their season with a record of 3-17.
