She was referring to Kingsland's appearance at the large Mayo Invitational cross country meet Thursday in Rochester.
"Adam (Buchholtz), Andrea (Mettler) and Marina (Schwanke) were our pleasant surprises, once again, dropping time and really putting themselves into the mix," said Uhlenhake.
Leading the Kingsland girls was Erica Earley (17:06.82, 87th). She was followed by Melinda Woods (18:51.62, 159th), Mettler (160th, 18:53.79), Jocelyn Voeltz (19:20.79, 168th), Schwanke (172nd, 19:32.98), Jamie Thompson (184th, 21:33.29) and Audrey Farlinger (186th, 22:40.97). There were no Kingsland girls in the JV or junior high races.
The boys varsity leader was Hunter Meisner (19:56.29), running at 138th. He was followed by Dane Gillespie (144th, 20:13.01), Zachary Buchholtz (149th, 20:53.20), Adam Buchholtz (21:39.19,154th) and Tom Mettler (157th, 23:18.79).
Logan O'Connell (28:13.30) and James Hayes-Hall (28:13.75) ran in the boys JV race. A total of 341 runners competed in the JV race.
"Overall, we did OK," said Uhlenhake, "but we need to start stepping up now. As a coach I want to see them getting more competitive each race."
Thursday night the team travels to Pine Island. Next Tuesday, Sept. 24, Kingsland will host its own cross-country invitational.
