Football season starts early for Knights at Wabasha-Kellogg

The Kingsland football team will open the 2013 season this Friday night at Wabasha-Kellogg, one week earlier than has been the usual in past years.
Kingsland and Wabasha-Kellogg are part of the new Blue Division of the Southern Football Alliance. Other teams in the Blue Division are Caledonia, Chatfield, Fillmore Central, Goodhue, Hayfield, Rushford-Peterson and Southland. Each team will play the other eight teams in their division, with one date open because there are an odd number of teams in the division. Kingsland's bye week is Oct. 4.
Last year the Knights finished with a 1-8 record, their only win coming against W-K, 22-10. In the last five years Kingsland has compiled a 12-33 record.
When it comes to playoffs, the Knights are still in Section 1A, along with Bethlehem Academy, Blooming Prairie, Fillmore Central, Goodhue, Rushford-Peterson, Southland and Wabasha-Kellogg. The Knights lost in the playoffs last year to Bethlehem Academy, 46-6.
The Southern Football Alliance also has Red and White divisions. Members of the Red Division are Kasson-Mantorville, Stewartville, Byron, Lourdes, Plainview-Elgin-Millville, La Crescent, Cannon Falls and Lake City. White Division schools are Dover-Eyota, Zumbrota-Mazeppa, Pine Island, Cotter, Triton, St. Charles, Kenyon-Wanamingo and Lewiston-Altura.
John Fenske is the Knights head coach again this year.
