"We gave ourselves a chance to win in the end, but came up a little short," said coach John Fenske about Friday's Homecoming game against Southland. "I'm proud of everyone, they played a great game."
Kingsland's Marshal Oeltjen runs hard as he flies by a Southland tackler.
Kingsland scored its third touchdown of the game with 7:40 left to go in the game, making the score, Southland 20, Kingsland 19. Fenske opted to go for two points, and the lead, but the extra-point attempt was no good, leaving the Knights one point behind, 20-19. That turned out to be the final score as the Knights dropped to 1-4, overall, and 0-2 in the TRC-South.
Friday night, the Knights will host Fillmore Central (1-4, 0-2) in a match-up that will see one of the teams pick up a conference victory. Both teams have a win over Wabasha-Kellogg in non-conference play.
Defensively, the Knights had four take-aways and no give-aways, but that still wasn't enough to muster up a win. Coming up with the take-aways were Marshall Oeltjen (fumble recovery and pass interception), Tyler Messner (fumble recovery), and Jordan Kohn (fumble recovery). The Kingsland offense did not turn the ball over to Southland.
Oeltjen was the workhorse on offense, carrying the ball 31 times for 93 yards. Quarterback Jacob Rindels picked up 40 yards on 19 carries. Also getting touches with the ball were Lenny Moore (5/16) and Jordan Kohn (1/2). The Kingsland defense gave up 307 total yards of offense, 213 rushing and 94 passing.
It was reported that Rindels completed five of eight passes for 64 yards and Oeltjen completed one pass, in the same number of attempts, for 15 yards. Receiving those passes (and the yardage) were Oeltjen (15), Rindels (15), JJ Fenske (22), Quinn Larson (0) and Moore (27).
In addition to the take-aways on defense, three players, Marshall Oeltjen, Tyler Messner and Justin Kraling, had tackles that resulted in a loss of yardage for the opponent.
Special teams players for Kingsland were DJ Smith (punting, 5/35.8), Lenny Moore (punt return/kickoff return) and DeAngelo Funches (punt return/KO return).
Scoring for the Knights were Marshall Oeltjen (2 TDs), JJ Fenske (1 TD) and DJ Smith (1 extra-pt kick).
Scoring by quarters...
Southland 7-6-7-0 = 20
Kingsland 7-0-6-6 = 19
