Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland downed a solid Lewiston/Rushford-Peterson team in a dual wrestling meet Friday and then took fourth place in a 10-team tournament at Hayfield the next day.

In the 38-30 win at Lewiston, the team "only had nine healthy bodies to fill out the 14 weights," said coach Bill Simpkins. "Due to some empty weights that have been a problem all year our margin for error is thin. LARP was 8-3 so far this year, winning nine of seven matches we had wrestlers at, and not giving up a pin (first time this year) we were able to knock off a pretty good team."

In the Hayfield tourney, Parker Hale, after some early jitters in the first round, dominated his last two opponents at 145 lbs. with a major decision in the semifinals and a fall in the championship, noted Simpkins.

Unseeded Brandon Turner at 171 lbs. lost his first round match to the eventual runner-up, but strung together three very solid matches to take third, added Simpkins, while 285 lbs. Broc Fiegel won his first two career matches, and got himself into the finals, taking second place.

Also placing for the Bulldogs were Brenn Olson, third place with a 3-1 record at 106 lbs., Jace Bunne at 138 lbs. with a 2-2 record for fourth place, Wyatt Richardson with a 1-1 record for second place at 195 lbs., and Blake Benson with a 1-1 record for second place at 220 lbs. 4th 2-2.

Wrestlers of the week

Blake Benson, a ninth grader, was moved up from 220 to 285 lbs. in the varsity dual against LARP, and his fall secured the win for the team. He also placed second at the Hayfield Tournament

For junior varsity, eighth grader John Barber, in his second year out, has shown improvement from week to week. His hard work in the practice room is paying off dividends, said Simpkins and he will be seeing some varsity action before the year ends.

GMLOK is at the Riceville tournament Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. Next Monday, the Bulldogs take on Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton in Harmony.
