Every year, fairgoers expect a vast variety of activities and special events to look forward to. Sheep, dairy and other livestock shows, a demolition derby, bull riding and a great deal more are offered during the Fillmore County Fair.
However, one activity has held a special meaning for many area residents over the past several years.
The arm wrestling competition was started years ago in honor of Randy and Bonnie Hahn’s son, Matt, and it continues to hold special attraction for many.
“We began the wrestling tournament in 1996, in memory of our son. He loved to arm wrestle with his friends every weekend,” said Bonnie Hahn.
His love for the competition spread into a fundraiser. Over the years, the proceedings acquired from the entry fees have been accrued for the purpose of a college scholarship for an area senior from Fillmore Central. This year's recipient of the scholarship was Cody Erickson.
Last Thursday night, many people from throughout the county gathered at the Beer Garden to watch more than 20 men and women fight for titles in several different weight categories.
The arm wrestling tournament commenced with an eager and rowdy audience, anticipating an exciting tournament. And they were not disappointed.
Whether competing for the first time or as a veteran, those entering the tournament rigorously wrestled with their opponents, to the delight of the audience.
As the minutes ticked on, sweat coursed down several faces as their matches seemed almost at a deadlock. Other matches were over much faster. Either way, the contests continued to provide the audience with tremendous entertainment.
The reception of so many people in the past years has proven a great encouragement to Randy and Bonnie.
“The response for the competition has been great. That the people keep coming every year is unbelievable,” Bonnie emphasized.
