Rumble in the jungle, down at the station...

Tell it, sing it, rhyme it!

"We're holding our spring Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) event, 'Stories, Songs and Rhymes'," said Chatfield Community Education director LuAnn Klevan. "We'll have games, an Action 100 room, snacks and fun. The event is for families with young children - infants to first grade - and the whole family is invited to participate."

The event, set for the evening of Monday, May 12, in the Chatfield Elementary School cafeteria, is a literacy event meant to encourage families to read together. It runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

"We'll have games such as target toss and a beanbag toss, activities - 'Down at the Station' barrel train rides, a petting farmyard, a planting project and cookie decorating, and "Rumble in the Jungle' take-home art projects," Klevan said as she highlighted a few of the events being planned for that evening.

She also explained that each activity or project is connected to a well-known story, song or rhyme.

"All the activities are connected to literacy," Kleven added. "Each activity site will include at least one story or nursery rhyme. Parents and/or volunteers will be able to read to the children at each stop. There will also be an Action 100 room that will have games and activities that support the various Action 100 levels. Action 100 is the district-wide literacy program for preschool and elementary students."

Snacks will be provided as well and will be from the recipe book "Super Snacks for Super Kids," which the ECFE will be selling to support the preschool scholarship fund.

Klevan stated everything about the event will be fun. "ECFE host three events every year," she said. "The purpose is to provide opportunities for children and parents to learn and have fun together. It's a great time for parents to focus on their young children and grandparents are also welcome."

Klevan pointed out that "ECFE classes are available during the school year," and that "Stories, Songs and Rhymes" is an opportunity for families to explore what ECFE has to offer.

"We have Monday morning classes and Thursday evening classes," she added. "The classes are for parents and children to attend together - more information will be available in August. This summer, we are once again offering a playground program for parents and little ones. 'Playground Time' is Tuesday mornings, beginning June17, from 9 to 10 a.m. There is no snack or separation time, but we will always have a story! No registration is necessary."

For now, Klevan reiterated the invitation to participate in "Stories, Songs and Rhymes" on Monday, May 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Chatfield Elementary's cafeteria. "It's open to all area families with young children. This is not exclusive to preschool or ECFE families. There is no admission fee, but we do request that families RSVP so we will have enough materials and snacks for everyone."

One may RSVP by contacting LuAnn Klevan at (507) 867-4210, ext. 5022, or by emailing her at

"During the event on May 12, families will have the opportunity to make a donation to the preschool scholarship fund, if they choose," she concluded.
