A local woman and son had a successful turkey hunt in the Chatfield area as Anna Krahn of Spring Valley and her son, Gavin, 6 years old, got their first turkeys ever.
This hunting party had an “awesome” weekend turkey hunting near Chatfield. From left, are Gavin Krahn, Craig Reichel, Blake Krahn and Anna Krahn.
The two were hunting with Craig Reichel, Anna's father, on his property near Chatfield. They both got the turkeys with a 12-gauge shotgun. Anna's youngest son, Blake, 4, was also with them.
Gavin's turkey was 27 lbs. with a 10-inch beard and 3/4-inch spurs. Anna's turkey was 22 lbs. with a 9-1/8-inch beard and 1-inch spurs.
This was Gavin's first turkey hunt. Anna has been hunting since she was 10, but this was her first time turkey hunting.
Minnesota has new youth hunting regulations in 2014, which allows youth under age 13 to hunt small game without a firearms safety certificate. They must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
"I think it's a great opportunity to take kids hunting and teach them lifelong skills," said Anna.
According to the DNR, the change is intended to be educational experiences to teach new turkey hunters - both youth and their guardians - the skills and techniques to be life-long turkey hunters and to get children outdoors.
"What an awesome weekend," said Anna.
