The Chatfield boys placed four runners in the top ten as they won the Pine Island 'triangular' with 33 points. PI(42) was second and Cannon Falls(55) placed third. "It was a great team effort in getting the win", said Coach Chris Frye.

Junior Christian Bance(17:09.0) took first in the meet, out-distancing the second place runner from Cannon Falls by 1 min. 8 seconds. Senior Justin Friedrich(18:20.0) was third, followed by junior Keagan Clarke(18:47.4) in sixth and ninth grader Nick Maki(19:03.7) in eighth.

Rounding out the Chatfield varsity runners were junior Anthony Voigt(15th, 20:20.2), ninth grader Kevin Bradt(17th, (20:38.9) and senior Tim Hawkins(23rd,21:22.8).

Junior Karen 'go-go' Gomez was the top Chatfield girls' runner, finishing the 4000 meters in 16:18.8. Gomez finished second to the state's top Class A runner, Emi Trost(14:50.7), Cannon Falls. Junior Maddy Larrabee ran second for Chatfield, finishing 12th, in a time of 18:17.9. Rounding out the remaining varsity runners were sophomores Hannah Friedrich(15th, 18:37.1) and Haley Woltz(16th, 18:56.6), seventh grader Abigail Paul(19th, 19:31.7) and sophomores Gracie Grant(25th, 20:37.3) and Elizabeth Walsh(26th, 22:13.8). The gals were third with 64 points. Cannon Falls finished first with 32 points, three ahead of host PI(3.14). "The girls ran well, too, added Frye, with particularly strong performances by Karen Gomez and Maddy Larrabee."

Running in the boys JV race were Alex Lien(21:41.1) and Kadin Hill(30:00.7). Running the 2400m junior high race were eighth graders Payton Guenther(3rd), Bennett Gathje(4th) and Josh Walsh(10th).

Last Tuesday, Chatfield hosted the 10th running of the "Shoe". The "Shoe" combines the times of the top five guys and top five gals...with the 2013 championship going to Plainview-Elgin-Millville. Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson was second and Pine Island was third.

Chatfield, with Karen Gomez and Christian Bance leading the way, finished eighth. "We had some strong individual performances, said Coach Frye, but injuries and illness hurt us in the team results."

Individually, Karen Gomez finished third in a time of 16:31.8. Also running for Chatfield's varsity were Hannah Friedrich(43rd, 19:31.6), Maddy Larrabee(46th, 19:45.8), Gracie Grant(67th, 21:16.5), Abigail Paul(68th,21:20.4) and Elizabeth Walsh(70th, 21:32.2). 105 runners competed in the varsity/JV meet Chrissy Lofgren, Stewartville, won the race, 16:14.2, with PEM's Sierra Stucky in second, 16:25.6.

In the boys race, Christian Bance ran a strong second, finishing the tough 5000m Chatfield course in 17:30.5. LARP's Austin O'Hare won the race in 17:19.2.

Next in line for the Gopher boys were Justin Friedrich(19:12.6, 17th), Nick Maki(19:50.4, 24th), Anthony Voigt(59th, 21:46.2), Alex Lien(60th, 21:46.6),Kevin Bradt(66th, 22:17.4) and Tim Hawkins(72nd, 22:43.8). Also running the 5000 meters for Chatfield were Bennett Gathje(23:19.6) and Kadin Hill(29:56.6).

This was Chatfield's 14th Invitational meet. This week the team travels to PEM on Tuesday and returns home next week to host the Three Rivers Conference Meet on Tuesday. The TRC has two boys teams, PEM(7th) and Cotter(12th) ranked in the state, and the Dover-Eyota girls ranked sixth in the state.
