Chatfield girls bolster grip on top of TRC-South

The Chatfield gals solidified their hold on top of the Three Rivers Conference-South with wins over the second and third place teams last week.

The Gophers improved their conference record to 9-0 and their overall record to 12-0 with a pair of wins over Rushford-Peterson (67-40) and Southland (72-57). Rushford-Peterson (9-2, 13-2) and Southland (7-4, 8-6) sit two and three in the TRC-South.
In the win over the Trojans, Brook Irish (13), Kirsten Keefe (12) and Morgan Henry (11) scored in double-figures, with a total of 10 players hitting the scoring column. Keefe led the team in rebounds with eight and assists with six. Tops in steals were Sidney Irish and Brook Irish, each with four.
"Got an outstanding defensive effort from the girls," said coach Brian Baum. "We were able to force 26 turnovers."

The Gophers also had three players in double figures against Southland: Sidney Irish (10), Maddy Larrabee (13) and Talamantes (16). All three had good shooting nights: Irish was five for 10, Larrabee connected for five of 11, and Talamantes hit seven of 12.
"It was a rough game, as expected," said Baum. "They are a much improved team. Our team was resilient and our bench really came through."
A total of 31 points were scored by Chatfield reserves.
"Another good team win," said Baum. "Two things we really need to improve on," he added, "ball handling and free throw shooting."

This week the gals have games with Fillmore Central, Tuesday at home, and Friday at Kingsland. The game with Zumbrota-Mazeppa, scheduled for Monday, has been cancelled. Monday, Feb. 3, they are at St. Charles.
