at Southland Friday night

In the first quarter of play, Chatfield scored two touchdowns, kicked the extra points, tackled a St. Charles player in the endzone for a safety, and kicked a field goal, it probably doesn't get any more dominant than that!
But as you look through the stats, there's probably one thing that Coach Jeff Johnson doesn't want to see. That would be 11 penalties for 109 yards. As you run into the tougher teams in the schedule, and get into playoff action, that's one stat you don't want to be leading in!
In the near shutout, Justin Viss led the defensive unit with 33 points, including one tackle for a loss. Also having a fine defensive game were Alex Haffner (22 points, INT, forced fumble, and fumble recovery) and Dalton Schwier (17 points, with a quarterback sack). The defense held the Saints to just 156 yards of total offense.
Leading the offense in rushing yards was Jake Neis. Neis accumulated 89 yards on just eight carries (11.1yds/carry), including one carry of 55 yards. He had one touchdown. Viss also showed his prowess on offense, rushing for 52 yards on eight carries (6.5/carry). Alex Haffner had 35 yards on 10 carries, including a three yard touchdown. Quarterback Nate Skare had six 'touches' for 51 yards (8.5/carry). Skare kicked three extra-points, got a two-pointer after a touchdown and kicked a field goal. Also getting into the rushing game were Drew Hurley (3/16), Cody Bly (1/4) and Ryan Meeker (1/4).
Nate Skare did all the passing for the Gophers, hitting six of 13 for 107 yards, including two touchdowns. He also threw one interception. Receiving the Skare passes were Jayme LaPlante (2/20, one touchdown), Jake Neis (1/34), Justin Viss (2/33) and Reid Danielson (1/20, one TD).
Special team players included Nate Skare (punting, 2/37.5), Alex Bradt (punt return, 1/15), Jake Neis (punt return, 1/21; ko return, 1/16), Sawyer Prinsen (kickoffs, 6/52.5), and Ryan Meeker (ko returns(2/20).
Friday night the Gophers will open their TRC-South conference play, at Adams, against Southland.
