The Chatfield girl's basketball team is one win away from the state tournament. The Lady Gophers have advanced to the Section Finals with recent wins over Winona Cotter, 49-29, and Caledonia, 41-40, in the sub-section championship game.

In the sub-section championship game against Caledonia, freshman Kirsten Keefe hit the winning free throw with just 1.5 seconds remaining on the clock. Keefe had missed the first of two shots before Caledonia took a time out. She made the second shot after the TO, which proved to be the game winner. Keefe finished the night with eight points, connecting on three of six from the charity stripe.

Senior Sarah Costello led the team with a dozen points, four field goals and 4/7 from the line. The senior leader also had three steals. Kyndra Neis and MaKenzie Miller each had six points in the win. Neis' points came on two three-pointers, while Miller hit two of three from the field and two of four at the free throw line.

Caledonia hit eight of 16 from the line and Chatfield was 11/21.

Miller pulled down a team high 10 rebounds, followed by Costello with eight. Sidney Irish had a team high four steals and three assists. Erin Kammer had three assists and two steals, while Keefe dished out three assists.

With the win over Caledonia, Chatfield now moves into the Section 1AA championship game Thursday night against Zumbrota-Mazeppa. Zumbrota-Mazeppa was the #4 seed on the West side and has now 'bumped' off the #1 seed, Pine Island(45-37), in overtime, and Stewartville, #2 seed, 63-45. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. in the Mayo Civic Arena. The Class A championship game between Spring Grove and Bethlehem Academy is set for 6:00 p.m.

In the Sub-section semi-finals, Chatfield downed Winona Cotter, 49-29. Sidney Irish scored the first bucket for a 2-0 Chatfield lead, and the Lady Gophers 'never looked back'. The largest lead for Chatfield came at the end of the game when Irish hit the final basket of the game, and the 20 point win.

Junior MaKenzie Miller led the team with 18 points, hitting nine of 11 shots. Chatfield had 16 assists in the game, four each by Kirsten Keefe and Sarah Costello, three each from Sidney Irish and Erin Kammer and two by Miller.

In spite of the 20 point win, Chatfield committed 23 turnovers. Credit to the big win has to be given to solid defense, and good shooting. Chatfield hit 21 of 36 from the field, 58.3%, and held Cotter to around 30% shooting.Chatfield scoring vs CotterCandace Gould 1-1/2-3, Irish 4-0-9, Costello 2-0-4, Kammer 2-1/2-5, Neis 3-0-8, Traci McDonald 0-0/2-0, Miller 9-0-18, Keefe 1-0-2, team 21-2/6-49.
