The Chatfield Gopher girls basketball team has gotten two significant

wins in its last two outings; an eight point win over Caledonia (15-6) on

Jan. 24, and a two-pointer (58-56) over a surging Plainview-Elgin-Millville

(14-6) team last Friday. The Lady Gophers are playing some of their 'best

ball' right now, key, as the end of the regular season is just over two

weeks away and the playoffs begin shortly after that.

In the game against PEM, Chatfield trailed by 10 points with a couple

minutes left in the first half, when they went on an 8-0 run to cut the

deficit to two at intermission. "That was the key to the game," said Coach

Brian Baum. Chatfield outscored the Bulldogs by four, 30-26, in the second

stanza, winning the game by two. "A big win for us," added Baum.

Foul trouble plagued the Gophers, with MaKenzie Miller sitting on the

bench for much of the first half. "We had great guard play," Baum said,

"and we shot out free throws very well."

The guards, Kirsten Keefe (11), Sidney Irish (14) and Maddie Talamantas

(9) accounted for 34 of the team's 58 points and all of the team's

three-point field goals. Keefe was also the team leader with six rebounds

and tied for the lead with five assists. Irish also had five 'dishes'. The

'three' also shot well, combining for 13 of 26 (50.0%) from the field.

The 'inside' play of Traci McDonald (4 pts, 2/3 fg, 4 pts.), Brook Irish

(3/4 ft, 5 pts.) and MaKenzie Miller (2/3 fg, 5/7 ft, 9 pts.) 'held their

own' and contributed greatly in the win. Candace Gould, Camille Rasmussen

and Maddy Kammer came off the bench and scored two points each.

Gould and Sidney Irish each had three rebounds and Brook Irish led the

team with a pair of steals.

The team only had nine turnovers in the TRC win and hit 15 of 21 at the

charity line.

Tuesday the gals host Kingsland (10-10) and Friday they will travel to

St. Charles (4-16). The team will finish the season with games against Pine

Island (away, Feb. 14), Lewiston-Altura (home, Feb. 15) and

Rushford-Peterson (away, Feb. 18).
