The Chatfield girls basketball team sandwiched a loss to Southland

(64-53) between an opening season win over Wabasha-Kellogg (59-37) and a

Saturday night win over perennial HVL power, Lourdes, 51-38.

The games with W-K and Southland are TRC games, while the win over

Lourdes will have some implications in the sub-section seedings at the end

of the season.

In the win over the 'northern' Falcons, Coach Brian Baum played all 17

girls on the roster, with 12 of them getting into the scoring column. Many

of the reserves saw significant playing time against W-K. Sidney Irish and

MaKenzie Miller each had 16 points in the season opening win. Others

hitting the scoring column were Candace Gould (1), Karlee Moulton (2),

Mariah Pederson (3), Jenna Vondal (2), Jennifer Hanson (3), Maddie

Talamantes (4), Maddy Kammer (2), Morgan Henry (4), Traci McDonald (2) and

Brook Irish (4).

Leading rebounders were Miller (7), McDonald (4) and Irish, Kammer and

Henry, each with three. Maddie Talamantes led the team with four steals and

Kirsten Keefe was tops in assists with six.

In the loss to the Rebels, Sidney Irish topped the scoring with a dozen,

including three of seven from three-point range. Senior MaKenzie Miller had

11 points and 11 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. Miller

was 4/9 from the field and 3/4 at the line. She also led the team with

three steals. Candace Gould had two three-pointers and was 2/2 from the

line, for eight points. Kirsten Keefe found her 'shooting eye' and

connected for nine points and led the team with six assists. Irish dished

out five assists. MaKenzie led the team with three steals.

"We looked OK at times," said Coach Brian Baum. "We played a good

veteran team, but our rotation (defense) was not where it should be," he

added. Two Southland girls (Jana Schammel and Haley Kirkpatrick) had 24

points each.

Saturday night the gals traveled to Rochester Lourdes and came away with

a nice 13 point win. "It was a great defensive effort," said Coach Baum,

"and we did a super job of handling their pressure defense. It was a great

team win!"

MaKenzie Miller had her second d-d of the season, 22 points, 11

rebounds. She also led the team with three steals. Kirsten Keefe was on

target from 'long-range', connecting on 4/4, finishing the night with 13

points. Sidney Irish had six points and a great floor game, just one

turnover.

The team had 16 assists in the win over the Eagles; Keefe (4), Irish

(3), Maddie Talamantes (3), two each from Traci McDonald and Brook Irish and

one each from Candace Gould and Miller.

Rebounds were also shared; Gould (3), Keefe (3), Kammer (4), McDonald

(3) and Irish (4).

The gals are now 2-1 for the season, 1-1 in the Three Rivers Conference.

This week the gals travel to Dover-Eyota on Tuesday, and to Fillmore Central

on Thursday.
