The Chatfield girls basketball team had a big win in its only game last week as the Gophers downed Lewiston-Altura 71-17 Thursday at home.

"We are pretty much at full strength for the first time all year," said coach Brian Baum. "Sidney Irish had a nice game in her first extended action since being out in early December. She had 11 points and played good defense and hustled. That was great to see and Brook (Irish) continues to be moving better each day so we are excited. It was a nice team win."

Chatfield was scheduled to face Dover-Eyota in a battle of two undefeated teams, but the game was postponed due to the extreme cold that canceled school for the day on Tuesday. The game will be played Feb. 20, which is just six days after the two teams meet in Chatfield on Feb. 14.

Against the 1-9 Cardinals last week, Chatfield led 39-12 at the half and then outscored them 30-5 in the second half.

Besides Sidney Irish, scoring in double figures were Maddie Talamantes with 14 and Kirsten Keefe with 12.

Ten Gophers scored with Maddy Larrabee adding nine, Sydney Gould scoring seven, Megan LaPlante getting six, Brook Irish adding four, Camille Rasmussen getting three points, Shelby Bernard scoring two and Deanna Danielson scoring one point.

Four other girls didn't score, but added to the effort as Madddy Kammer had two rebounds and two assists, Mariah Pederson had two rebounds and two steals, Morgan Henry had a rebound and Brooke Adler had a steal.

Brook Irish led the team in rebounding with six while Keefe led the team in steals with four and assists with five.

This week, after a home game Tuesday, Jan. 14, against 8-2 Plainview-Elgin-Millville, the Gophers will travel to 2-7 Caledonia Thursday. Next Monday, Jan. 20, they will take on undefeated Rushford-Peterson at home in a battle for the top spot in the Three Rivers Conference South.
