Gophers repeat as section champs; headed to state once again
Tuesday, February 18, 2014 3:16 AM
As most wrestling fans know, dual meets come down to match-ups, and nothing was truer Saturday as the Chatfield Gophers defended their section championship and are headed to the "big dance" for the second year in a row.
The Gophers celebrate Ty VanSickel's pin during the title match with Kenyon-Wanamingo. The Gophers won and advance to state for the second year in a row.
The Gophers had no problems in their quarterfinal match against Wabasha-Kellogg, downing the Falcons 66-9, after jumping out to a 63-0 lead.
Saturday, Chatfield faced Zumbrota-Mazeppa in the semi-finals, winning by one point, 33-32, in a highly contested match.
Cody Bly (195 lbs.) put the Gophers ahead for good with a major decision and a three-point lead. Jacob Bleess, at 220 lbs., clinched the win, with another major decision, and a seven-point lead, 33-26, going into the heavyweight match.
Nothing was easy in the match against the Cougars. Chatfield had to earn every single point, even if there was a loss as losing on a decision, instead of a fall, or a technical fall loss, instead of a pin had a bearing on the point total. Every point counts, and nothing was more evident than that in the win over Zumbrota-Mazeppa.
Chatfield had a much easier time, score-wise, against No. 1 seed Kenyon-Wanamingo in the championship, winning by a convincing score of 41-14. The Gophers won 10 of 14 matches in the championship match, and claimed its second straight section team championship.
Who the Gophers wrestle won't be known until the coaches do the seedings. Here are the Class A section champions, with the latest Guillotine rankings in parenthesis: 1) Chatfield (#7), 2) Jackson County Central (#6), 3) Minneota (#4), 4) Sibley East (#11), 5) Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (#2), 6) Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale (lean and mean), 7) Pierz (#9), and 8) Frazee (#3).
The coaches will seed five teams. The No. 4 seed will wrestle the No. 5 seed. Seeds one through three will get a random draw from the three teams that don't get seeded. Only a guess, but the Gophers could get Jackson County Central in the first round, but one guess is a good as any. The Gophers know they need to beat them all to win the championship, so the best advice is one match at a time.
The Section 1A individual wrestling tournament will be held this Friday and Saturday at Mayo Civic Center. Team, and individual, results at the state tournament will be reported on KFIL radio, starting at 9 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 27.
