In the final poll of the season, The Guillotine magazine had the Chatfield Gophers at fourth; in the seeding for the state tournament, the coaches had the Chatfield Gophers third; in the wrestling of the actual tournament, the Chatfield Gophers had themselves as first!

On the way to the state championship during last Thursday's meet, Chatfield beat Pierz (40-18) in the quarterfinals, Frazee (38-19) in the semifinals, and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (38-22) in the championship match. ACGC was the No. 1 seed at the state tournament and ranked No. 1 in the final Guillotine poll, Frazee was the No. 2 seed in the tournament, and finished as the No. 2 ranked team by The Guillotine in the final poll.

In addition to winning the state championship, Jared Goldsmith (113), Ryan Meeker (132) and Hank Friederichs (138) were named to the All-Tournament team. Chatfield won nine of 14 matches.

Six Chatfield wrestlers went undefeated (3-0) through the dual meets, eventually leading to the state championship: Jared Goldsmith (113), Ryan Meeker (132), Hank Friederichs (138), Harvey Friederichs (152/160), Cody Bly (195) and Jacob Bleess (220/285). Going 2-1 were Ty VanSickel (120), AJ Riley (145/152), and Alex Haffner (170/160). Logan Karver was .500, at 1-1 for the team tournament.

Others wrestling for the Gophers, in their complete team win were, Maleek Hussein (106, 1-2), Jake Mandt (126, 1-2), Tye Bentz (145, 0-1), Kevin Bradt (160, 0-1), Austin Dahl (182, 0-3), and Ian Morrison (220, 0-1).

Many of the losses suffered by the wrestlers were team point-savers...in other words, wrestlers may have lost a match, but they lost a three-point decision, not giving up the major decision, tech fall, or pin.
