A balanced scoring attack wasn't enough to overcome the

outstanding performance of one Zumbrota-Mazeppa player, putting the

Chatfield girls basketball team on the short end of a 56-52 score,

and a trip to the 2012 State Tournament.

Four Gopher gals scored 10 points each, but Ashley Hinsch

(Z-M) had 31 points, and single-handedly maneuvered through the

Chatfield defense repeatedly. "We didn't have an answer for Hinsch

(Ashley)," said Coach Brian Baum. "When we did a good job on her,

someone else would hit a big shot for them," he added.

Tied for the lead in scoring for Chatfield, all with 10

points, were sophomore Sidney Irish, junior MaKenzie Miller, and

seniors Sarah Costello and Erin Kammer. "I actually thought we

played pretty well," said Coach Baum. "We just couldn't get that

loose ball when we needed it, or hit any key free throws down the

stretch. That, and the foul trouble hurt us, especially losing Sarah

(Costello). We definitely had the start we wanted. It was a great

game and a great game of runs. We just didn't get it done. This one

will hurt for a while, but like I told the girls, after a few days

they will look back and realize what a great season they had. I am

proud of not only what they accomplished, but how they accomplished

it and their attitude at practice and games. I looked forward to

every practice and game, and believe me, said Coach Baum, that

doesn't happen every year. What a great group of kids, led by our

six great seniors, Erin, Kyndra, Karen, Sarah and our two great

managers, Katie and Bailee. It was a great ride!" The girls and

coaches want to say a big thank you to our fans, who came out in full

force last Thursday. It was awesome!

In other stats, Sarah Costello led the team with eight

rebounds and hit 6/6 at the free throw line. Erin Kammer led the

team with four assists and freshman Kirsten Keefe had a team high

four steals.

Others who scored for Chatfield; Candace Gould (3), Kyndra

Neis (3), Traci McDonald (4) and Kirsten Keefe (2).

Chatfield finished their season with an overall record of

21-8, including the Section runner-up trophy. They Lady Gophers were

14-4 in the TRC, good for a tie for third with Caledonia.
