Track teams finally get back in action

The Chatfield track and field teams were back in action after a more than two week hiatus as they participated in the Section 1A True Team meet held at Triton High School. Both the boys' and girls' teams finished sixth out of 18 teams to compete.

The girls' team was led by Maddy Kammer, who earned first place finishes in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. The junior finished the 200-meter with a time of 26.63 and the 400-meter with a time of 1:00.97. Autum Erickson finished third in the 200-meter with a time of 26.88. She also placed second in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 12.81 seconds. Ashley Baker finished 0.18 seconds behind Erickson in the 100-meter, finishing with a time of 12.99, which was good enough for a third place finish.
Distance runner Karen Gomez-Ruiz took fourth place in the 3200-meter run. She completed the two-mile race in 12:45.57.
Maddie Talamantes had a good day in her hurdle races, finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles and second in the 300-meter hurdles. She completed the 100-meter hurdles in 17.06 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 50.41.
In the field events, Kammer added another top-five finish, placing fourth in the high jump by clearing a height of 4'10". Senior Mikaela Bray place second in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8'6". Baker added a sixth place finish in the long jump, leaping 14'11 1/2".
On the boys' side, Jayme LaPlante led the way for the Gophers earning first place finishes in both the shot put and the discus. His winning shot put throw traveled 45'2" while his discus throw of 179'8" was more than 25' farther than the next closest competitor. The senior also added a seventh place finish in the 100-meter dash and a ninth place finish in the 200-meter dash. He finished those races with times of 11.79 and 23.91, respectively.
Eighth-grader Austin Swancutt also participated in the 100- and 200-meter dashes finishing 13th and 14th, respectively. He completed the 100-meter in 12.11 seconds and the 200-meter in 24.64 seconds.
Freshman Kevin Bradt place 14th in the 400-meter dash, finishing the one-lap race in 57.36 seconds. In the 800-meter run, Anthony Voigt finished with a time of 2:15.65, which was good enough for 11th place.
Distance runner Justin Friedrich placed 14th in the 1600-meter run and 13th in the 3200-meter. The senior ran the mile race in 5:10.67 and the two-mile in 11:03.9.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Alex Haffner finished eighth with a time of 17.39 while Chase Salerno finished 15th with a time of 18.82. Haffner also earned a 12th place finish in the 300-meter hurdles, completing that race in 46.51 seconds.
In addition to LaPlante's finishes in the field events, the Gophers also received a fifth place finish in the high jump from Parker Fossum, who cleared the bar at 5'4".
The Gophers are scheduled to participate in the Triton Invitational this Friday in what will be their last regular season meet before the section meet on May 22.
