Wrestlers take third at large Winona tourney

Two Chatfield wrestlers were champions in their weight class as the Gophers took third place at the 13-team Winona tournament Saturday in their first competition of the season.
Ryan Meeker and Harvey Friederichs won their weight classes. Meeker, at 138 lbs., beat Ben Boyton of Dover-Eyota in a 6-5 decision for the title. Friederichs, at 152 lbs., downed Noah Ryan of Kasson-Mantorville with a fall in 1:26 to finish undefeated in four contests at the tourney.
Hank Friederichs, wrestling at 145 lbs., took second place, losing to Brady Berge of Kasson-Mantorville in the final match by technical fall. Jacob Blees also took second place, losing a 6-3 decision to Eric Norgrant of Wabasha-Kellogg in the 220 lb. title match.
Ty VanSickel also went 3-1 in the tourney, finishing third at 120 lbs. by pinning Jacy Ball of St. Charles in 2:28 during the third place match.
Kasson-Mantorville won the 13-team tournament while Dover-Eyota took second, leading a string of Three Rivers Conference schools including Chatfield and Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson, which finished in fourth behind the Gophers.
Other results for the Gophers include Alex Haffner in fourth place at 160 lbs., Tryc VanSickel in fifth at 106 lbs., Jake Mandt in fifth at 132 lbs., Lundy Dalton in fifth at 182 lbs., Alex Coe in fifth at 195 lbs., Tye Bentz in sixth at 126 lbs., Logan Karver in sixth at 285 lbs., Maleek Hussein in seventh at 113 lbs., and Mitchell Meeker in eighth at 170 lbs.
The team, which is still rounding into wrestling shape after a late start due to the extended football season, will go to the Park High School tournament in Cottage Grove on Saturday.
