The Chatfield Gophers made a 'rare' appearance in an individual
tournament last weekend, and still came out on top. Rochester Mayo took
second behind the Gophers in the Lake City Tournament. Five of the
wrestlers came out with first place medals; Cody Bly (170, 3-0), Harvey
Friederichs (138, 3-0), Alex Haffner (152, 3-0), A.J. Riley (132, 3-0) and
Justin Viss (195, 2-0). Chatfield also had three wrestlers taking 'silver':
Hank Friederichs (120, 2-1), Sam Fryer (220, 2-1) and Jared Goldsmith (106,
2-1). Ryan Meeker took third (145, 3-1) and sixth places to Jacob Bleess
(1-2), Austin Dahl (1-3), Ty Van Sickel (1-0) and Ethan Wright (1-3). Logan
Karver (0-2) did not place in the tournament.
Here are some tournament notes from Coach Joel Viss: "Chatfield won the
tournament with Rochester Mayo taking second. Jacob Bleess, and Logan
Karver were forced to drop out due to injury, and Ty Vansickle dropped out
after getting a pin in the first round, due to severe flu symptoms. All
three of these wrestlers contributed to the team win prior to dropping out.
Hank got his first loss of the season during a very good match vs Miles
Patton 4-6. Big wins for A.J. Riley, Harvey Friederichs, Alex Haffner,
against state ranked opponents. Cody Bly came back from a 0-5 deficit to pin
Sam Hinsch of Roch. Mayo. Sam Fryer made his first appearance in a
tournament finals after a great day and an upset in the semis. He lost to
Daniel Chavez of Saint Charles 0-9. Daniel is also a state ranked wrestler."
As a team, Chatfield is still ranked ninth in the state, Class A. The
Gophers have seven wrestlers ranked by "The Guillotine" magazine: Jared
Goldsmith (8th, 106), Hank Friederichs (2nd, 120), A.J. Riley (5th, 132),
Harvey Friederichs (2nd, 138), Alex Haffner (8th, 152), Cody Bly (9th, 170)
and Justin Viss (9th, 195).
Saturday the wrestling team will travel to the Janesville/
