Dorothy M. Flynn, 88 died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, of natural causes at the Stewartville Care Center in Stewartville, where she had been a resident since 2012.
Dorothy Mae Shiek was born July 17, 1925, in rural Elgin, to Frank and Gertrude (Stueve) Shiek. She grew up in on the family farm, attended Elgin schools, graduating from Elgin High School in 1942. She attended a business college in Minneapolis for one year before returning to Rochester where she was employed at Mayo Clinic as a lab tech in the Pathology Dept. for a few years.
Dorothy was married on Aug. 21, 1948, at St. Johns Catholic Church in Rochester, to James "Pete" Flynn. Following their marriage the couple farmed in Pleasant Grove Township, where they raised their family and lived all there married life. Dorothy was a farm wife and homemaker and Pete was a lifelong farmer. Mr. Flynn died on April 19, 2005, and Dorothy moved into Stewartville that same year.
She was a longtime member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church, and was very active in all of its ladies activities. She was a member of the Good Neighbor Club in Pleasant Grove Township, and with her husband also belonged to the Farmers Union.
She enjoyed gardening, canning, raising chickens and selling the eggs and playing cards with neighbors and family. Dorothy loved time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dorothy's family would like to thank all of the Stewartville Care Center staff for her excellent care.
Dorothy is survived by one daughter and three sons, Dr. Patrick (Jody),
of Woodbury, Anne (Michael) Moriarty, of Byron, Dr. Michael (Priscilla), of Winona and Matt (Patricia), of rural Stewartville; son-in-law, Jack Smith of Newport, Ore.; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Adeline Shiek, of Plainview and Ellie Shiek, of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Pete, her daughter, Kathleen, her parents, three brothers, Ray, Russ and Freddie Shiek and sister-in-law, Lucille Shiek.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Simpson, with Rev. John Wilmot officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
