Helen Pattridge, 95, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at the Stewartville
Care Center, where she had been a resident since 2006.
Helen Hoffman was born Aug. 5, 1917, in Chatfield, the youngest of nine
children, to August and Ida (Mundstock) Hoffman. She was baptized Sept. 2,
1917, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chatfield. She grew up on the family
farm and attended Trinity Lutheran School in Rochester, where she was
confirmed March 29, 1931, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and
graduated from the eighth grade on June 5, 1931. She then attended Chatfield
High School, graduating in 1935. She was married in Great Falls, Mont.,
to Kenneth G. Pattridge. Following their marriage, the couple moved to
Lincoln, Mont., where Kenneth worked in the lumber industry at a sawmill. In
1942, the family moved to rural Pleasant Grove Township of Olmsted County,
where they bought Kenneth's grandmother's farm and raised their four
She worked in the fields alongside her husband, always had a big garden
and did a lot of cooking, canning and baking. She was a member of St. John's
Lutheran Church for more than 60 years, where she helped start a fund for
young people to go into the ministry and also taught Tuesday School. She
served on the Union Cemetery Board for many years and was a charter member
of the Good Neighbor's Club, which she belonged to for more than 50 years.
The Pattridges moved to Stewartville in 2005, and Kenneth died Nov. 14,
She loved the many flowers she grew in her gardens, playing cards, and
having friends and family in for dinner. She will be missed by her family
and friends who have wonderful memories of her.
She has been in the Stewartville Care Center for more than six years,
where she was given wonderful care. Her family would like to give special
thanks to everyone for their patience and kindness, for the wonderful food,
craft department and church services, all of which Helen enjoyed. The
employees are amazing and her family very much appreciates their care of
She is survived by four daughters, Marlene (Kenneth) Sabatke and Sharon
(Pierre) deCathlineau, both of Rochester, Jeannine Vance of San Antonio,
Texas, and Barbara (Kenneth) Culberton of Rochester; seven grandchildren,
Michael (Margaret) Sabatke, Naomi (Timothy) Smyrk, Ryan Smyrk, Brian
deCathlineau, Lori (Mark) Bremer, Vickie (Bill) Thompson, Tony Culberton and
Paula (Brian) Culberton-George; and six great-grandchildren, Shelby and Nick
Sabatke, Matthew and Luke Bremer, Dillon and Jessica Thompson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her grandson, Randy
Vance; her parents; and five sisters and three brothers.
The funeral service was held Friday, Dec. 14, at St. John's Lutheran
Church in Stewartville, with the Rev. Lyle Fritsch officiating. Burial was
at Union Cemetery in Pleasant Grove.
