Lanesboro, Mabel-Canton light up scoreboard
By Craig Moorhead

The Burros' nine-man football squad traveled to Mabel-Canton on Sept. 14. In a barn-burner of a game, the teams combined for a phenomenal 111 points as Lanesboro defeated the Cougars 72-39. Scores came quickly, usually with few plays. Among 38 total possessions, each team had only two that consisted of more than five plays. Each team had a player rush for more than 200 yards. Mabel-Canton kept up with Lanesboro's early scoring, but was not as successful with extra-point conversions and could not overcome six turnovers. The Cougars (0-3, 0-2 SEC) scored on half of their 10 first-half possessions but were down 44-32 at the break and managed only one touchdown in the second half. The Cougars were never able to score twice without the Burros scoring in between. Field position didn't help their efforts to catch the runaway Burros. Six times in the second half, LHS took possession in Cougar territory. When the ball was not crossing the goal line, it most often was on the ground. M-C fumbled nine times, losing five. The Cougars' sixth turnover came with a Niko Anderson interception. Lanesboro fumbled three times, losing two at the Cougar13 and 10 yard lines. The Burros also lost one of their two muffs while fielding punts. For LHS, Anderson scored five touchdowns, taking 17 handoffs for 234 yards including TD runs of 65, 32, 30 and 18 yards. His all-purpose numbers totaled 303 yards including a 69-yard TD pass from Garrett Boggs. Boggs twice surpassed the century mark with 136 rushing yards and 101 passing yards. He scored from 48 yards out on the Burros' first play from scrimmage and later raced 34 yards as LHS pulled away 22-12. The 5-foot, 10-inch junior quarterback completed 6 of 7 passes including the TD toss to Anderson plus a pair of point-after conversion completions to Kole Ruud and Daulton Gartner. Among the 10 Burro touchdowns were a 57-yard run by Gabe Decker, a 35-yard scoring jaunt from Gartner and the night's finale - a 58-yard sprint by Will Semmen. Hunter Johnson carried 21 times for M-C for 239 yards and four TDs including a 74-yard scoring burst. With 58 kick return yards, Johnson had 207 all-purpose yards. The longest play of the night was an 80-yard kickoff return TD by M-C sophomore Keyser Wenthold. The sixth Cougar score came on a 26-yard pass to sophomore Donnie Lind from Collin O'Bieglo. O'Bieglo completed 7 of 13 passes for 102 yards with one interception. Both teams were efficient through the air and gained over 100 yards aloft, but both preferred the run. LHS outgained M-C 569 to 300 on the ground and 670 to 401 overall. For the Burros, Sept. 21 is homecoming. They will host the Wolverines of Glennville-Emmons.
