The Fillmore Central football team built up a 38-0 lead through the first three quarters and then battled Kingsland's fourth quarter rally to eventually win the TRC-South contest 45-27 Friday at Kingsland.
With the win, Fillmore Central is now 1-2 in the TRC-South, and 2-4, overall. Friday night the guys will host Rushford-Peterson (2-1, 4-2) in another TRC-South match-up.
Fillmore Central got things started on the first play of the game, with fullback/running back Dan Gatzke taking a handoff from quarterback Brandon Breitsprecher and rumbling 70 yards for a touchdown. A total of 22 seconds of the game had elapsed when the Falcons struck first pay dirt.
Fillmore Central's second score came on a 75-yard drive, concluding with a one-yard touchdown plunge by Gatzke. McKinnen Stone scored the third touchdown for the Falcons on a four-yard run with 2:13 left in the first half. Gatzke got a two-point conversion, giving Fillmore Central a 20-0. Logan Masters intercepted a Kingsland pass with one second left in the first half as the Knights were moving the ball down the field. At the intermission, the score remained 20-0 in favor of FC.
The excitement continued for Fillmore Central in the second half, as Andy Love recovered a fumble, giving the Falcons the ball on the Kingsland 27. Gatzke got his third score of the game on a 27-yard run on the first play of the second half: FC 26 Kingsland 0.
Good fortune continues for Fillmore Central when Stone recovered another fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Three plays later Gatzke got his fourth touchdown of the game and FC leads 32-0.
The Falcon defense held Kingsland to four plays on the next possession and took over on the Knights' 44 yard line. A six-yard carry by Gatzke sets up a 38-yard touchdown run by Tom Henry and FC led 38-0. By this time coach Chris Mensink is getting a lot of reserves into the game.
Kingsland scored four touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but fortunately for Fillmore Central, it was a matter of too little, too late.
Fillmore Central tacked on another touchdown in the fourth quarter when freshman Tyson Ristau scored on a 20 yard run. Collin Bennett kicked the extra point, capping off the 45 point total.
Leading the offensive attack was Gatzke, who had four touchdowns and 177 yards in 23 carries. Fillmore Central didn't have any pass completions, so all the offense was generated on the ground. Also contributing to the 378 yard total were Stone (10/54, 1 TD), Tyson Ristau (8/63, 1 TD), Tom Henry (2/40, 1 TD), Devon Block (4/53), Breitsprecher (2/-8) and Bryce Whitehill (1/0).
