It can be dizzying keeping up with the upcoming changes for Mabel-Canton and Southeast Conference football. The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) doing away with traditional high school football conferences in 2015, 2016 and presumably beyond is certainly a major alteration; the final SEC grid season of 2014 will be different as well.

Legion team gets win in tourney, another over St. Charles
It has been a busy last few days for the Central Legion baseball team, with trips to Montevideo and St. Charles. This past weekend the team won one and lost two in the Montevideo Tournament, and last Wednesday picked up a win over St. Charles.

Changes in area football schedules coming in 2015
Football scheduling will change once again in 2015 as the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors recently adopted a plan that places all member schools with football programs into districts.

Coaches and players from the area will participate in the 41st annual Minnesota Football Coaches Association (MFCA) Tackle Cancer All-Star Football Game 1 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Clemens Stadium on the campus of St. John's University at Collegeville.

Fillmore Central's girls golf team took third place at the state tournament while Jordan Miller, representing Fillmore Central in individual boys play, finished 17th.

Junior Olivia Haug took fourth place in the discus throw last week at the Minnesota Class A State Track and Field Championships, winning an all-state medal.

Mabel-Canton names Scholar Athletes of the Year
Two $100 scholarships have been awarded to the two student athletes who have combined excellence both in the classroom (must have a minimum B average) and on the playing field throughout their years at Mabel-Canton. Emphasis was placed on maximum participation in athletics, class rank and leadership.

M-C softball players earn awards
Three Mabel-Canton softball players have earned Academic All-State honors. To achieve that award, a player must maintain a 3.6 grade point average (GPA) or higher (cumulative from their sophomore year through three quarters of the senior year) while earning a varsity letter. They include Sara Lind, Kourtney Coyle and Emily Brumm.

Geving, Manning named Cougar Athletes of the Year
Lydia Geving has been named as the Mabel-Canton female Athlete of the Year for 2014. The senior standout completed her high school career with 15 letters (five each in volleyball, basketball, and softball). Senior Noah Manning was named M-C male Athlete of the Year for a second straight season. He totaled 11 career letters for the Cougars (four for football and softball, three for basketball).

L/FC/M-C track & field sends Haug to state
The two-day Section 1A Track& Field Championships took place last week at Paul Giel Field in Winona. Competitors who placed first or second in individual events, relays, and those who achieved a standard time, distance, or height advanced to the state tournament in St. Paul.

Jordan Miller qualifies for state
Jordan Miller, Fillmore Central junior, continued his championship play going with a first place finish at the Section 1A golf tournament held last week at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester. Miller shot a 75, five strokes better than second place B. Borkowski of Lewiston-Altura.

Fillmore Central acquires Minnesota Twins grant
The Fillmore Central School District announced that it has been chosen as the recipient of a $5,000 Minnesota Twins Fields for Kids Grant that will help complete the fencing project at the Fillmore Central baseball field in Preston and add a windscreen to the outfield fence.

M-C baseball awards announced
Collin O'Bieglo has been named Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2014 Mabel-Canton baseball team. The Hardest Worker Award was earned by Noah Manning, while the Most Improved Player Award went to Bryce Michels.
