Winter woes continue into spring
Fillmore Central High School students were treated to another unexpected day off on Monday, even though the temperatures were the warmest the area had experienced in over 150 days. Deep frost levels and shifting ground caused a water main to break on First Avenue SW, behind the high school. With repairs taking place, and water shut off, the school was closed at the Harmony site while the elementary students were able to attend in Preston. MELISSA VANDER PLAS/NEWS-RECORD

"It's a celebration," said Vicky Tribon, chairman of the Harmony Area Community Foundation, and explained the Swing into Spring fundraiser will be celebrating what the foundation has already accomplished since being established in August of 2012 and what it has planned for the future.

Fillmore County once again collecting outdated medications
"This is a good get rid of unwanted and unused prescription drugs," said Fillmore County Sheriff Daryl Jensen as he presented information about the National Take Back Initiative prescription drug collection. Fillmore County will once again participate on Saturday, April 26, gathering prescription drugs that might otherwise become part of the waste stream, or worse, be abused by people for whom they were not prescribed.

In an area with residents' ancestors coming from Scandinavian countries, many times hearing of Spanish food makes one think "spicy" or "tortillas." Fillmore Central Spanish teacher Brian Wolfgram believes this to be a common misunderstanding when it comes to food from Spanish-speaking countries.

Water drainage continues to be a concern in Mabel
In February, a discussion started between the city of Mabel, Newburg Township and the Fillmore Soil and Water Conservation district to discuss an issue that has become a concern in the past few years: flooding and drainage in the Mabel Watershed. It is a problem that has been highlighted due to flooding in 2008 and then the flood of June 2013.

In order to curb confusion as clubs go from business to business for fundraisers, the Fillmore Central Booster Club and Birds of Prey Booster Club have joined forces. Under the Booster Club umbrella, every other club will receive their shares of fundraisers to which businesses donate money.

Spring Grove police chief warns of possible 'quick-change artist' at local retailers
I just wanted to send out some information that may affect some of the area businesses. Between the days of March 17 to 19, there has been a white male, about 30 years of age, with short brown hair and a beard and mustache, that has been in the Houston and La Crescent area and apparently he is an accomplished quick-change artist.

Mabel-Canton junior gets rare experience as 'Page for a Day'
Mabel-Canton junior Hannah Nolte took a week off of school - and it was not because she was ill, wanted to play hooky or took a short vacation. Rather, it was because she had a rare opportunity to serve as "Page for a Day" at the State Capitol in St. Paul. Nolte was one of 70 juniors in the state that was selected to participate in the program.
