Relay for Life brings families, friends together to celebrate, remember and fight back
You will notice, as you flip through the pages of this week's Bluff Country Reader, that we are featuring several Relay for Life teams which will gather in Harmony on Friday night to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The money raised is used in several areas, which you can read about in my front page story.

Always be YOU!
The people in your life won't always support your decisions. So you need to remember that life is not about justifying yourself, but rather creating yourself.

Seeking fun - and equality - in the weather world
I've always been a bit of an in-the-closet weather geek.

It's my suspicion that most of us are here in the yearlong crazy conditions of the Midwest. And a lot of the time we actually carry on the activity quite openly. You won't find, for example, any 12-step meetings where a person might hesitantly step forward to say, "Hi, my name is Lisa and I'm a weather-a-holic."

Love of birding inspires a career in teaching
Charlotte Anderson of New Ulm told me she didn't like school when she was a girl. Then her fourth grade teacher started a bird program for her students. Charlotte loved it.

Friends are culturally determined
Recently when I was referring to a friend, I called him "my dear friend Steve." I had been thinking that I needed to send him an email and inquire about his wife, whom last I heard was not well. I tried without success to remember her name, and it occurred to me that not only have I never met his wife and don't remember her name, but I also am unsure about the rest of his family. I know he has one daughter (I do know her name) and I think he has a son. But I am not sure.

It was a perfect day to celebrate the love of two wonderful young people
On Saturday, June 21, the first day of summer, my parents and other members of my family traveled to the Twin Cities to attend the wedding of my cousin's daughter, Jade, and her now husband, Keaton. I love weddings because they celebrate not only the love between the couple getting married, but also the love of friends and family who come to support them and celebrate with them.

It's time to work on learning patience
There's an ability to "go with the flow" that comes naturally to some people. Two words to encompass that experience would be patience and calm.

Birder travels to Germany to test cutting-edge optics
I was pleased to be one of 34 journalists from around the world invited to Wetzlar, Germany, (the City of Optics) to test Zeiss binoculars that were made especially for birding.

Kale and strawberries make great salad combination
There's no need to water outside, but there certainly is a need to weed and mow. The veggies and herbs are growing too and that's rewarding.

New book about sleep could be a 'dream' read
You'd be annoyed if that happened while in traffic. You'd be angry if it was spent on-hold. And you're not getting paid for it? Outrageous, but it happens every day of your life: seven hours, give or take, spent sleeping and you can't account for it. You can't even be sure you stayed in bed.

Downsizing book collection is difficult task
The topic of keeping books has been in my head this week because I have been sorting through my collection of books. It is time to make the decision that at least some of them have to go. After all, by my informal count, I have more than 2,500 of them. It isn't likely the next place we live will have the wall space to accommodate them. So, something has to give.

Remove bad habits to prevent emotional weakness
You have been through some extremely tough times. Each of those experiences have helped you progress with your strength and wisdom. But still, you struggle with emotional weakness. You know what you need to do for yourself, but do you know what NOT to do?

Summer events coming soon
As a resident of Harmony, the excitement is building for all of us who live and work in the community. The Fourth of July celebration is just around the corner. Then, a week later, we get to play host to the Fillmore County Relay for Life. We are all getting excited, as well as a bit nervous, about these big events coming to our community.

I was the sorriest
I was walking behind three friends from England as we strolled around Vienna. They exemplified the famed English politeness, apologizing quickly for any possible infraction of manners.

It was all about the bees
Honeybees were certainly on our list of topics this last week. Who would ever think that a whole evening, including a meal, could be about honeybees? The first hint we had about the topic for the event was when we walked in the door at the McNamara Alumni Center at the University of Minnesota campus. The big hall actually was reminiscent of a flower garden, decorated with huge blossoms on tablecloths, and napkins fanned out at each place, all in the bright colors of nature. The centerpieces were live flowers, all very colorful and which we later found out are from plants that attract honeybees.

Trail adventures spring back into action
As winter tiptoed daringly into spring - and then dashed headlong into summer - the enticing weather spurred me back onto the area's recreational trails with my recumbent trike.

Time marches on, the alarm goes off more often
She hit a home run as her team won the Benilde softball tournament. She hit another as her team took the Waseca tournament. I watched her swish a three pointer effortlessly during an AAU basketball tournament. Her grades are in the A category.

I haven't done a lot of cooking lately, but I have been gardening. Doing lots of gardening.

Book about fatherhood is honest, humorous, heartfelt
It's a wonder you survived your childhood. In fact, the heights you jumped from, rides you took, things you ate, dares you accepted - it's a wonder you are even alive.

Public is invited to friend's big birthday celebration
"One photo?" I said to myself in exasperation as I was reading an email from a friend's family. They were asking for a photo to add to others for Ceil Allen's upcoming birthday celebration (to which, by the way, the public is invited).
