Area resident writes play celebrating Judy Garland
A passion for sharing the life of Judy Garland allowed Krista Lenn Johnson, who works at Spring Valley Senior Living, to create the play
A passion for sharing the life of Judy Garland allowed Krista Lenn Johnson, who works at Spring Valley Senior Living, to create the play "Judy, Judy, Judy," which was recently performed at Austin's Historic Paramount Theatre.
The connection Krista Lenn Johnson has with Judy Garland can be traced to her childhood days growing up in Waseca. As a young adult, Krista moved to southeastern Minnesota where she is raising her daughter and working at the Spring Valley Senior Living Center.

Smithsonian Magazine honors Lanesboro in special destination list
In its most recent issue for the month of April, the Smithsonian Magazine released a publication of the top 20 small towns to visit in the United States. Many of these towns belong to the east coast and states such as Florida, Virginia and Vermont. Others were from Arizona and Idaho.

A cappella group coming to work with Chatfield choir students, perform public concert
Chatfield High School's choral arts instructor, Barbara Ahl, has invited an a cappella group, "Cat's Pajamas" to visit the students next Tuesday, March 11. The group will also perform an evening concert, sharing their new release, "Kitty Litter."

Local artist exhibits capstone art at the Lanesboro Arts Center
Local artist Courtney Bergey and her art were the stars of the show last Saturday, Feb. 22, during the opening night of her ceramic exhibition "Of the Earth" at the Lanesboro Arts Center. The art will be on display until March 29.

Chickadees celebrate continuance of life
I heard a storyteller tell an ancient tale of the Iroquois people. A ceremony took place at the solstice and they played the game in which six small stones, painted black on one side and white on the other, were put into a bowl. The wooden bowl was decorated with four clan symbols - the bear, wolf, turtle and deer. To play the game, a player hit the bowl against the ground. If five of the six stones turned up the same color, the player scored a point and took another turn. The first player to reach 10 points won the game.

Sen. Franken, area farmers step up fight against changes to renewable fuel standards
As the comment period on a proposed rule to amend the renewable fuel standards (RFS) nears the deadline, Sen. Folz shatters national record
Alex Folz, 13-year-old Spring Grove athlete, established a new national standard for his age group on Jan. 11 at the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick National Championships at Denver, Colo. He and the other 2013 age group national champions were introduced to the nation on Jan. 12 during the telecast of the Denver Broncos playoff victory.
