3/7/2006 9:02:00 AM Davids appropriates $500,000 to Historical Society for museum
The House Jobs and Economic Opportunity Policy and Finance Committee heard for the first time on Thursday, March 2 testimony related to a bill chief authored by State Rep. Greg Davids (R-Preston) that would appropriate $500,000 to the Houston County Historical Society to design, construct, furnish and equip a building addition to the organization’s museum.
"The Houston County Historical Society has a very active group of dedicated volunteers who are working to preserve Houston County history," Davids said.
"This funding will allow the Historical Society to protect, preserve and share elements of the county’s rich heritage, such as a diverse collection of photographs and records, for generations to come."
The funding would come by way of bond proceeds allotted to the Minnesota Historical Society, and then in turn to the Houston County Historical Society in the form of a grant.
The bill appropriates the funding via capital improvement expenditures, which include the acquiring and betterment of public land and buildings.
The funding would not be available for appropriation until the commissioner of finance has determined that at least an equal amount is committed to the project from non-state sources. If passed, the bill would be effective the day after enactment.
The Houston Historical Society maintains sights and activities around the county to help residents and visitors better understand the county’s history.
Many services are offered by the organization, including tours, demonstrations, restorations, research, genealogy searches and various other events designed to promote the county’s heritage and educate the public.
