Board establishes fees, gets ready for 2010-11 school year

At its July 19 regular meeting the Spring Grove Board of Education addressed annual organizational items. Following are items set for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year.

Bonding will be the same as last year with the clerk/treasurer at $50,000, the financial secretary at $50,000 and individual staff at $12,500.

The hot lunch prices will be the same as last year with prices set at $2 for K-6, $2.10 for 7-12, $3.25 for adult meals and $.35 for milk. Breakfast prices are also the same with prices set at $1 for K-12, $1.75 for adult meals and $.35 for milk.

The board set participation fees at the same rates as last year. High school participation fees for football, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball and cheerleading fees for 2010-2011 are $50 and junior high fees are set at $40. There is an athletic family cap set at $180, which is the same as last year.

Uniform cleaning is $15, percussion band rental is $30 and non-percussion band rental is $50. Color guard is $15 if students are not in band.

Other extracurricular fees for speech, knowledge bowl, jazz band, select choir and school play/musical are all set at $15 with a family cap at $70. The fees must be paid before the activities begin with the exception of band rental and uniform cleaning fees to be paid by Oct. 15.

Athletic admission prices are set at $3 per game for students, $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens. Year-long passes may be purchased for $30 for students, $65 for adults and $20 for senior citizens.

Out-of-state tuition rates are set at $1,500 for grades K-6, $2,000 for grades 7-12, which are the same rates as last year.

The board salaries were set at the same rate as last year. Board members will receive $700 per year with an additional $300 per negotiating cycle for each negotiator.

For out of district meetings board members will be paid $25 up to 4 hours, $50 for 4-6 hours, and $100 for over 8 hours, excluding special school board meetings.

Central State Bank of Spring Grove will be the bank depository with official depositories for investments at Central State Bank of Spring Grove, Eitzen State Bank of Eitzen, Bank of the West of Mabel, Bank of the West of Caledonia, Merchants Bank of Caledonia and New Albin State Bank of New Albin.

The official school newspaper will be the Spring Grove Herald.

Bid acceptance for bread and bread products was awarded to Sara Lee (only bidder.) Bid acceptance for milk and milk products was awarded to Kemps (only bidder.)

The school district established membership contracts with Minnesota School board Association, Southeast Service Cooperative, Hiawatha Valley Education District, Minnesota Rural Education Association, Minnesota State High School League and Region V Finance.

The board approved renewing its student accident insurance, which is an optional insurance provider, with Student Assurance Service of Stillwater.

Also approved was the Health and Safety Program Revenue Application for the Minnesota Department of Education.

Administration reports given

Principal Nancy Gulbranson reminded the school board that the proposed change to senior class dues slated to begin with the 2010-2011 school year will raise the class dues from $25 per year 7-12 grade to $50 per year 7-12 grade.

The Washington, D.C. dues (change in class dues as discussed by Gulbranson) was approved.

Gulbranson told the board that several teachers attended the differentiated instruction training held July 6-9 in Chicago.

Gulbranson and Superintendent Rachel Udstuen attended the PBIS conference on June 23, which discussed sustainability for cohorts 1-5.

Gulbranson explained that drivers education classes are slated to run July 25 - Aug. 5.

Spring Grove's Kinder Prep Academy will begin the first week in August for all incoming kindergarteners.

The eligibility meeting for coaches will be held Aug. 10 with Athletic Director Michelle Anderson.
