Chatfield council reviews wastewater, water utility issues
Anton Adamek
On a Mission

The Chatfield City Council reviewed a five-year pump maintenance contract presented by Chatfield Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent Darryl Haner during a very short meeting on Monday, Feb. 25.

Haner stated they have an annual inspection coming up of the 13 pumps between the plant and two lift stations. Looking for a new five-year contract for pump maintenance, Haner received five bids.

He presented the lowest bidder, Quality Flow, to the council for approval. "They are the same vendor we have now and we've been happy with them," stated Haner.

This was the same company which installed pumps during the 2005-2006 construction at the plant.

Council member Russ Smith asked if the bid included parts and labor, to which Haner responded it did not.

Clerk Joel Young also presented the annual report from the Minnesota Department of Health concerning the public water system. He mentioned the report showed there were four-inch diameter mains that should be upsized to six inches to increase fire flow. There was no coliform bacteria detected in any of the wells.

Supporting grant application

The council considered a resolution that would support the Chatfield Trails Group's submission of a Federal Recreational Trail Grant application to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The application seeks funding for improvements that would be made to the ATV trailhead east of town, which they own and operate.

Young explained the group would like to build a three-sided shelter and place rock on the parking lot by the trailhead. The group had already received $1,000 in matching funds from non-state support.

The resolution was approved, which would have the city, as the group's fiscal agent, accept the grant award if it is given.

Board of Review

Young stated the Annual Board of Review for both Fillmore and Olmsted counties will be coming up in April.

Meetings with Fillmore County will be April 22 to 25 at the Fillmore County Assessor's office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Olmsted County's will be April 30 at the Olmsted County Government Center from 2 through 4 p.m.

Smith noted people need to make an appointment with their respective county for a meeting. Young said the short meeting window in Olmsted County will most likely be stretched longer.

Other business

• With the absence of Mayor Dr. Don Hainlen, Smith presented a recommendation to approve the appointment of Darryl Costello to the Cable Access Board for a term running until Jan. 31, 2016.

• Young mentioned that the Committee of the Whole meeting would take place on Mar 11. He said they would focus on a couple topics, most likely on street, water and sanitary sewer work in the future.

• The Chatfield senior class raffle, to be held on on Sept. 6, was approved.

• Councilmember Ken Jacobson mentioned the fire department has been discussing an ordinance dealing with the hourly fees associated with responding to a call. There will be changes in an ordinance reflecting that, but Jacobson said it will be determined in the future what specific changes those will be.

• Councilmember Robert Pederson congratulated the Chatfield High School varsity wrestling team on their trip to state.
